SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Humans won't be the only ones running around in superhero costumes in San Diego this month.
Helen Woodward Animal Center will host their 5th annual PAWmicon on July 15, a free dog- and kid-friendly event to get families into the Comic-Con spirit and celebrate their canine companions.
A costume contest will be held for those who wish to dress their dog up and the Animal Center encourages owners to join in the spirit and dawn superhero wear for the dog-and-owner contest. The event will also feature music, games, comic-themed prizes, and dog goodies.

The event began five years ago as a way to give attention to pets waiting for adoption at the center, Jessica Gercke of Helen Woodward said.
"I had just started working at the Center and I was thinking about how the orphan pets at the Center, given the opportunity, would also travel distances and line up to meet their superheroes," Gercke said. "And how their superheroes didn’t even have to wear a costume or know how to fly. They just had to want to adopt them. It seemed like such a natural correlation."
And it's all for a great cause too. All proceeds from the event will benefit the animal programs and services at Helen Woodward.
Now, the event has received help from local businesses and gained national attention alongside the popular pop culture convention.
"We are really proud, not only to have created the event but also to know that the fun promotion shows off the beauty of adopted pets to people across the country," Gercke added.
