A former city councilman now running for mayor of Coronado is accused of causing a frightening and serious traffic accident.

Neighbors tell the 10News I-Team they have a lot of questions for police.

The 10News I-Team received news tips about a Saturday, September 20, car accident in Coronado along 5th and Palm avenues. The photos caught the 10News I-Team's attention - pictures of an overturned car, a Toyota Camry, after the car had struck a palm tree, a fence, a home, and two parked cars.

"He was really moving, he was really going to go through like this," says 83 year old Coronado resident Jerry Starke whose home was struck by a vehicle being driven by 61-year-old Frank Tierney, a former city councilman in Coronado who is currently running for mayor. According to campaign ads, traffic control is one of Tierney's top priorities, but his car was out of control last Saturday afternoon shortly before 1 p.m.

"I was in the kitchen, and I heard all this bang and boom and bop," explains Starke who says Tierney's car struck her front porch, and rolled on two wheels right through the yard where moments before her 9 year old granddaughter had been playing with her turtles..

Starke says initially, Coronado police would give her little information. Tierney was taken to UCSD Medical Center, and Starke says he came back to her home a few hours later.

"He comes back, says he thinks he did some damage, but didn't remember it," says Starke.

Coronado Police Commander Jesus Ochoa says information from the hospital ruled out alcohol as a cause. And the police will provide a report to anyone who requests it.

When Reynolds asks Ochoa: "Is he getting any special treatment?" Ochoa says: "No, not at all, we're especially trying to treat him like any other citizen."

Tierney declined an on camera interview with the 10News I-Team, but he told 10News I-Team reporter Lauren Reynolds in a phone interview that "there was no drinking; it was one o'clock in the afternoon; I was returning from shopping."

He also said, "It was an accident. There was no problem. It was a medical condition and that's it."

When asked, "Were you speeding?" Tierney replied: "Of course not, if I were speeding there would be tire tracks all over."

The 10News I-Team did find Tierney's tire skids at the stop sign right near the accident, as well as a chunk of palm tree taken out, a picket fence knocked down, and deep scrapes in the asphalt where the car eventually landed.

The Coronado Police Department may report the accident to the DMV over the "medical condition," and may call for Tierney's license to be re-evaluated.
