SAN DIEGO -- Your family's health is a priority. That's why it's so important to make sure your doctors are qualified. But many parents aren't aware that their child's pediatrician might not be board certified. While the doctors might be licensed to practice medicine and treat patients, they might not have the credentials to call themselves pediatricians, standards upheld by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Board of Pediatrics.
The 10News I-Team checked the board certification status of over 170 San Diego area pediatricians by running the doctors' names in the American Board of Pediatrics online database. The I-Team found 20 of those 170 doctors aren't board-certified as pediatricians. To check to see if your doctor is a credentialed pediatrician, check out the American Board of Pediatrics website www.Abp.Org.Simply type in the doctor's name into the "Is My Pediatrician Certified?" search form located on the left side of the Web page. When choosing a pediatrician, check your doctor's credentials online and ask the doctor about his or her training and residency. For more information, check out the 10News I-Team blog.
