Is It Baby Time? Wives Almost Always Decide

87 Percent Of Women Say They Make Procreation Choice

POSTED: 8:41 am PDT May 16, 2008

Only about one in 10 women says she feels pressure from her husband to have a baby, according to a survey by Betty Confidential.com.

Survey: Who Decides About Babies?

In the poll, 87 percent said they are the ones who will decide when to pursue parenting.

The site posed the question as "Does he want you pregnant sooner than you want to be?" as it tried to determine who makes women feel pressured to have babies as soon as they are married.

"Our survey results show that women are in control, they decide when they want to have children, and they have more freedom to consider the physical and emotional requirements themselves, without pressure from their husbands," said Mary Beth Sammons, an editor for the site. "It's a very positive sign that society is affirming a woman's right to acknowledge that motherhood is an experience they need to be prepared for and not get pressured into. It gives them the leeway to examine the lifestyle changes that will come into place."

She said it means that women who are juggling work and home, personal goals and their biological clocks, there is one less stress factor.

The site said in a news release, however, that sometimes prospective grandparents and other family members still encourage quick breeding.
